SHPO Description: This irregular shaped Spanish Colonial Revivalmstyle residence has a combination hip tile roof over the two-story portion. The one story front entry has a gabled roof with arched openings. Exposed wood rafters are located under the hipped roof eaves. A decorative iron balcony is found on the corner on the front east side. Decorative wood shutters are found on some of the windows. The wood windows are a mix of fixed or casement and are slightly recessed. (Judy Triem)
SHPO Significance: This house is significant as part of a group of houses built in the same Spanish Colonial Revival style between 1926-1929. This house was built by owner-builder John W. Latham who also built the house next door at 626 E. Mendocino Street in 1928. He advertised the house in the January 2nd, 1929 Pasadena Star News as being in the "beautiful location at Christmas Tree Drive" (Santa Rosa Avenue) and as a "distinctive 9-room Spanish; exclusive section, scenic setting, 4 bedrooms, restricted 60' lot, 3 baths, extra lavatory, reception hall with winding stairway, roller screens & other special features. Exceptionally heavy construction. $16,000." The first resident was Robert L. Shanklin, a dentist.
